Bad Dürrheim has a long-standing tradition as a spa town, and the overarching goal of its new design is to revitalise its identity as a vibrant health and wellness destination while enhancing its appeal as a residential area.
The development plan focuses on integrating the health tourism sector with the local residential community, combining existing assets with fresh new elements. The Saline complex will harmonise with the town and focus on the surrounding public parks, respecting historical heritage while creating new community gathering spaces. Parking will move underground, freeing up space to transform into a central community hub.
The new thermal hotel, positioned at the intersection of Luisenstrasse and Hubertstrasse, will serve as a modern icon for Bad Dürrheim. Designed to align with surrounding buildings, the hotel will feature fluted facades, panoramic views, and a central atrium. The therapy centre expansion will echo this aesthetic, connecting it to the hotel and Solemar Spa as part of a cohesive spa complex. These buildings will be linked by a weather-protected corridor, creating a harmonious counterpart to the historical saline complex. Sustainability is a priority, with energy-efficient designs and solar power reducing consumption and operational costs.
Green spaces within the district will be more interconnected, with parks linked into a pedestrian-friendly network, centred around the reopening of the Stille Musel stream, which will flow openly through the spa park and enrich surrounding areas. Each park will have a distinct character, from play-focused areas in Röder and Hindenburg Parks to the sensory-focused Saline Park. New paths and platforms will allow visitors to enjoy the Stille Musel, which will also serve as a natural drainage system to manage flooding.
The expansive green space in the spa park’s southern area will be preserved, enhanced with interactive elements and event spaces, offering locals and visitors a rejuvenated retreat within this historic spa town.
